TIDBINBILLA NATURE RESERVE
Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve can be found south west of
Canberra and it contains a vast number of excellent activities for all
types. There are a number of long and short bushwalks. An old homestead
can be hired to spend up to a week in the park and there are nature sanctuaries
protected with predator proof fences where endangered species can thrive.
The area is so vast that one day is certainly not enough to take in every
aspect of the reserve. The trails are all well signposted and there are
plenty of information boards throughout. It's now hard to imagine that
this place was totally destroyed in the 2003 bushfires and thankfully,
programmed and natural regeneration has occurred, though much of the damage
can still be seen on trails where burnt trees still exist and split and
peeled rocks that were exposed to the fierce heat can still be seen. The
name Tidbinbilla was given as a name where aboriginal boys became men.
The visitor information centre features quite a large
shop featuring books, souveniers and park paraphernalia plus a small cafeteria.
Visitors to the park can pay for an annual visitors pass, costing up to
$35.00 or a daily pass costing up to $12.00. There are discounts for seniors
and concession card holders..
