Adventure #3
Adelaide to Coober Pedy

Salt piles near Lochiel, SA.

Stayed at Lochiel at a nice rest area overlooking a dazzling, white salt lake. Before sunset the children looked around and managed to get lovely black sticky mud on their shoes. From Lochiel we drove onwards to Port Pirie where we found a park and did some necessary shopping. After refueling at Port Augusta we visited the arid plant Botanic Gardens which was really interesting. There we saw our first Sturts desert pea and many other wonderful plants.

Our next stop required a couple of beers and a chat with a nice couple from Portland Victoria who had years of traveling experience. Next was a morning spent at the Woomera missile and aircraft exhibits and then lunch at Glendambo where the flies and sheep outnumber the human population. With budget accommodation on the agenda the red bus pulled into a rest area near Ingomar station where we appreciated a beautiful sunset and a chocolate pudding.

An underground house being built at Coober Pedy, SA.

On the 18th of August we arrived at Coober Pedy and noodled for opal. Our potchy finds, although fun, did not change the size of our moneybag. We found Coober Pedy a fascinating place with underground houses and museums, a dusty golf course where coloured balls are used, (so the goannas do not mistake them for eggs) ..and some interesting views from the lookout. We managed to do a tour of the town with a guide. This enabled us to be driven near the working opal mines where blowers were in action.

After leaving the Stuart caravan park we witnessed the beautiful sandstone rock formations of the Breakaways. Some contrasting colours of reds, whites, yellows and brown tones could be seen as we ate our lunch.
