Adventure #4
Coober Pedy to Uluru

Last night we sat around the campfire with other campers at the Cadney Homestead and an elderly man with musical talent played the accordion. We toasted his birthday with a port and told stories and sang songs ..a great night.

Arrived at the painted desert with our oil pastels. The walk was interesting and the view spectacular. Such a variety of colour in the rocks made drawing the hills a good activity for the children.

Painted desert in South Australia.
Uluru (Ayres Rock)

After sharing a yummy cinnamon and sultana damper at a rest area on the Lasseter Hwy, we ventured toward Uluru. We booked a powered site for two nights at Yulara Resort and packed a picnic to view Uluru at sunset. As the colours of the rock changed from red to purple we were then treated with the full moon rising from behind the rock. A truly amazing sight.

The next morning a Ranger led us on an informative "Mala walk" along the left side of the rock. We were pointed out some interesting caves and plants such as the Bush plum, a greyish leafed plant. The Bush fig and Spearwood growing in the crevices. While the Bloodwood, Hot bush and Spinifex grass flourished around the base.

In the afternoon we ventured the "Valley of the winds" walk at Kata Tujta (the olgas). Some majestic rock formations on this 7.5 km walk and very scenic. I am making the most of the camera to share some of the wonderful sights we have seen.

The highlight of the day for the children was finding and photographing a Perentie goanna. I walked half the "base walk" with Peter and the children, then Peter gallantly walked the rest and retrieved the bus for us. A beautiful day ...although time to move on.
