I remember when Jo Bjelke-Petersen ex-premier of Queensland had the manic idea of building the tallest building in Brisbane. This was to be the grand symbol of his power and put Queensland on the world map. In more recent time, President Mahatir of Malaysia has had the same idea.
I certainly don't want Shoalhaven to emulate the Queensland of Jo Bjelke-Petersen.
To me, the collosus planned for the Huskisson pub site looks very much in the Bjelke-Petersen mode. Mega massive in height, bulk and scale, the proposed building complex of 114 luxury apartments, shops, tavern and conference centre will completely dominate this most prominent headland in Jervis Bay.
The result will be a complete change in the character of Huskisson with the imposition of a 4-6 storey collusus into a street scape which is only one or two storey. In total, this is a massive over-development of a site which is visually one of the most important in Shoalhaven.
Some years ago, Council floated the idea of 10 to 14 storey apartment blocks beside Moona Moona Creek, Huskisson. And we will all remember the saga of various grand proposals for Goodnight Island near Greenwell Point. These proposals seem to have been served up only for the purpose of bumping up the land price.
Yes, it is very tempting in these times when there are many negatives happening throughout the world to catch a bit of optimism with grand schemes.
But is this really what we want for Huskisson - another Gold Coast?
Yours etc.
