Early in 1998, NPWS are intending to carry out some erosion control work and environmental repairs in the small section of Buderoo (Jervis Bay) National Park behind Huskisson. Know affectionately as "Huskymoon" (a combination of Huskisson and Moona Creek), this area has traditional been a Mecca for uncontrolled vehicle access, rubbish dumping and rampant weed growth.
Huskymoon contains significant wetlands and some threatened species such as the gloss black cockatoo and the yellow bellied glider. Most importantly though, this small patch of bush boasts a diversity of wildlife and vegetation, despite its proximity to urban development. The local community, Land and Water Conservation and the Service have already had some clean up days and this continued cooperation will assist in maintaining Huskymoon's considerable conservation values.
The Service has written a Review of Environmental factors (REF), which assesses the environmental impacts of a proposed development. The REF proposes that some tracks will be closed to vehicles, except for management and firefighting purposes. Other tracks will be rehabilitated and converted to walking tracks and there will be some minor drainage control and replanting programs.
The REF will go on exhibition during November and a public meeting is organised for 2nd December at the Husky Bowling Club. Local residents and community groups will have the opportunity to discuss the works with Service staff at this meeting.
