The flowers that bloom in the spring....

Recent spring rains and warm weather have turned the bush into a veritable wonderland. Here in the Shoalhaven we are blessed with a diversity of plant communities within ready access. The coastal heathlands of Beecroft Peninsula and Booderee National Park, sheltered forest gullies and open woodland of the hinterland and the plateau heathlands of Morton National Park and Barren Ground Nature Reserve offer a diversity of wildflower "gardens".

You do not have to go far to enjoy the display. Take a stroll down Ben's Walk or the Bomaderry Creek trail in the heart of Nowra, visit Booderee National Park (Jervis Bay) where hakea, banksia and leptospermum are all in full bloom and boardwalks lead through more fragile heathland areas allowing the walker an opportunity to enjoy some of the more delicate flowering plants. The Botanical Gardens Annex on Caves Beach road (Booderee N.P.) with specimens clearly labelled along the various trails, gives the explorer an opportunity to become familiar with the names of many of the plants common to our area . Or, simply step (gently of course) off the road in any area of undisturbed bushland and take a moment to enjoy the the treasures to be found there.

So... wherever you are, take a moment to enjoy the "bushland open garden display". Whether it is a refreshing lunchbreak stroll, a weekend family picnic or an overnight bushwalk, don,t miss out!! There is beauty in the tiniest flower as captured by Jim's photos and it is so good for the soul.
