In 1938 when Shoalhaven Council built this weir across Bomaderry Creek
as a water supply measure, they would have had no idea that it would be
disturbing the ecology by almost completely stopping fish migration. In
the 1990s, there is now a recognition that all dam walls, even small ones
like the Bomaderry Creek weir, play drastic roles in restricting the available
habitat for Australian fish. Over the years, the weir pondage has provided
a swimming hole for local people, particularly young people. The proposal
now by NSW Fisheries is to demolish or modify small weirs like that at Bomaderry
Creek in order to facilitate fish habitat and migration.
At the next ACF Shoalhaven meeting on Wednesday 8th October, Fisheries
Biologist Allan Lugg and Shoalhaven Water Engineer, Tom Fawcett will be
guest speakers. They will talk about the proposal to modify the Bomaderry
Creek weir to make it more 'fish friendly'. The presentation will start
at 7.30pm Nowra Library Meeting Room
This meeting is held in the meeting room underneath the Library in Berry
